  • DORSET COVID 19 RESPONSE HELPLINE

Firstly, can I thank you for everything you’ve been doing to help with the COVID-19 community response efforts in Dorset.

Many vulnerable people of all ages may have been self-isolating for some weeks by now.

We have written to around 15,000 ‘shielded’ people today to let them know we’re thinking of them, and to check they have everything they need to keep them healthy and happy during this time.

Click here to download a copy of that letter.

We know there are probably more people across the county who are not necessarily shielding but do not have the help and support they need.

We’re asking you to please help us spread the word among your residents and anyone who may use your services of the various ways they can get in touch if they need help and support during these times.

    Dorset COVID-19 Response Helpline: 01305 221000
Referral into the Dorset Council COVID-19 response will reduce the likelihood of vulnerable people going without support.

    Guidance for referring into responses:

    1. Care and safeguarding concerns, urgent food/meds requests – no other support network available
      Dorset COVID-19 Response Hub. Call 01305 221000, 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week
      or email communityresponse@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.
    2. Ongoing food/meds/befriending help – no other or limited support available
Voluntary and community support for vulnerable and shielded people in Dorset area (including East Dorset).Age UK (North, South and West Dorset) are co-ordinating requests for help with issues relating to loneliness and isolation, or support in accessing items such as food, cash or medication. Call 01305 269444 or email enquiries@ageuknswd.org.uk.
    3. Carer concerns not fitting into above categories
Support for carers across the Dorset Council area linking into local groups – online resource and advice centre.
      Carers Support Dorset: Call 0800 368 8349, email admin@carersupportdorset.co.uk or visit www.carersupportdorset.co.uk

Our clear message is don’t be afraid to ask for help and support during this time. No-one should go without essential food or medicines or feel lonely or frightened. We’re working with community organisations, town and parish councils, and registered care and housing providers across the county to make sure support is available to anyone who needs it. If you know anyone who needs help, please encourage them to get in contact.

I look forward to continuing to work with you.

    With best wishes,

    Theresa Leavy
Executive Director – Dorset COVID-19 community response
On behalf of Dorset Council, Dorset NHS partners and voluntary community sector

  • UPDATE ON THE CHIDEOCK COVID-19 SUPPORT GROUP

Chideock Chatters Rice & SpiceI am sure everyone in the village would like to thank our wonderful Covid 19 Support Group or Community Group as it was more commonly called.  I know they have helped so many in the village especially the elderly and the vulnerable from collecting their newspapers to delivering their medical prescriptions.  Recently Dorset County funded a Grant to help all these community groups and I am happy to say that our group has had a grant of £600 approved.  Up until now this community website has helped in the funding of printing posters, soup cartons, etc., but this new grant will allow the volunteers to purchase face masks which we feel would give their clients a little more confidence.  Below are many other activities the group and others, i.e. The Chideock W.I are involved in but everyone is working together to make sure all are as safe as can be in our village.

    • Over 450 flyers were printed and delivered, before the lockdown, so that the elderly residents who do not have contacts within the village, would not be worried about prescriptions/food
    • Many journeys have been made to and from Lloyd’s pharmacy, due to the queuing times. This incurs additional petrol costs to a solo trip. We had 3 volunteers standing in the queue for up to 6 hours per day, for a week. This is likely to start again now that they are no longer delivering and are only accepting 3 prescriptions at a time. We have a lot more than 3 villagers to help!
    • Tanya has been making and delivering soup to a number of local residents – cost of ingredients and containers to transport the soup to the person in need.
    • Phone bills to and from the residents, for company, with phone calls sometimes lasting up to an hour at a time
    • All of the efforts that the WI are putting in sewing laundry bags and other PPE equipment. ……Stay safe

  • HELP FROM DORSET DIGITAL CHAMPIONS

Dorset Digital Hotline – Can we help you?

     Telephone:  01305 221000 (Select Option 2).

Monday to Friday 10.00 am to 12 noon (except Bank Holidays) or leave a message.

Many people in your local community are likely to be relying on digital online services and applications more than ever before.  For some this will be a first and they need to learn from scratch and for others there are new digital hurdles to overcome almost on a daily basis just to get every day jobs done such as shopping or ordering prescriptions.

We wanted everyone in your local community to know that there is a new free telephone hotline set up in response to the COVID-19 lockdown, to provide support for people with IT and digital problems of all kinds.  The hotline has received more than 50 calls in the first three weeks.

Here is a selection of some of the support the digital advisers can provide – no problem too small!

    • helping families with digital applications for home schooling
    • providing help to get online for home shopping
    • support for all digital NHS services and e-Consult
    • setting up video calls such as Skype and Facetime to keep in contact with friends and family
    • support to use all digital appliances and solve problems
    • using digital to exercise at home and keep fit

An example of how the Dorset Digital Hotline can make a difference to people’s lives is expressed by one of our digital advisers.

Andy Hargreaves a digital adviser said: “One lady I helped this week uses her iPad to keep in touch with her family via Facetime. She told me that she couldn’t hear her family speaking to her clearly on her calls because the sound on the iPad was distorted. I helped her to correct the problem over the phone and soon it was working properly. She said to me that if she wasn’t in isolation she would come over and give me a hug because the iPad was her lifeline now to the outside world.”

The Dorset Digital Hotline is run by a group of volunteers mostly made up of retired IT professionals and some Dorset Council staff. The team are extremely versatile and experienced and can offer a wide range of support to anyone including assistance to vulnerable people in your community.

Please pass this information on through your own channels to community groups, friends and family.

We look forward to hearing from you!
